September 1997 Unofficial MSU Football Skuttle-Butt

This page consists of facts that I have read and rumors that I have heard or been emailed. I cannot vouch for the accuracy of the rumors, but I want all of you to know what I know. If you have heard or seen something, email it to me at swindoll@ebicom.net.
David Wilson, Mississippi State's Director of On-Campus Recruiting, wants to talk MSU football with you at your club functions or meetings. Call him at (601) 325-2534 or contact him at his email address, which is dwilson@athletics.msstate.edu. Also, if you have any high school or junior college player info, email it to him.

09/30/97 - MSU is looking at Clinton HS QB Brad Jones, who is 6-2, 190-lbs and runs the 40 in 4.75. Other schools interested in him are Ole Miss, USM, La Tech and Arkansas.

09/30/97 - Another player MSU is looking at is Nathan Jackson, a 6-4, 210 DE from Florence HS. LSU is also interested in him according to The Clarion-Ledger.

09/30/97 - Here are a few more players that I saw at the Saturday football game:

Kelvin Love - QB from Coahoma CC.
Al Hunt - QB from East Central CC.
Brian Hubbbard - Tupelo HS.
Rodney Outlaw - Starkville HS.

I also saw players from Aberdeen MS, Macon MS, West Point, MS, Georgia (not sure what towns; Columbus and Macon maybe?) to name a few. Anybody know of other players that I didn't list here that were at the game? Sure wish those tags on the recruits' shirts were a little bit bigger. They are very difficult to see.

Look for the MSU Pressbox article tomorrow. I've run out of time tonight.

09/29/97 - MSU's football coaches will be at various Georgia high school games this coming week. Beginning October 1st, NCAA rules allow D-I college coaches to attend high school and junior college games. All you MSU Bulldog fans in Georgia, look for MSU coaches at Macon, Valdosta, Thomasville or Thomaston (not sure which), Albany, and the Atlanta area. Go to the games at these locations and introduce yourself to the coaches. If you have any player info give it to our coach. We fans can and do make a difference.

I'll have more football info tomorrow. I will have an exclusive for you. I'm going to tell you what it is like to be in MSU's pressbox during a game. It is a unique and interesting experience. MSU is first class all the way. Look for details tomorrow. I'll also have additional recruits names. I've had a long weekend from my travels this weekend (Went to two high school football games Friday night. Got in bed at 1:30 a.m., then got up at 6:30 a.m. because I had to be at State by 8:00 a.m. to record my recruiting segments for Bulldog Bash. After the football game Mary Ann and I went to Memphis to see the Titanic Exhibit. We got back from Memphis at 9:30 Sunday night), so I'm not going to post much today. Talk to you tomorrow.

09/27/97 - There were 120 recruits at the game. I will give you some names when Mary Ann and I get back from Memphis. Here are two to tide you over: Dorsett Davis of MS Delta CC and Justin Griffith of Magee HS in Magee, MS. Justin was with his entire family. Dorsett was with several other MS Delta CC players. Dorsett is reshirting this year due to the fact that he signed two letters-of-intent (MS Delta CC and a Kansas Juco) preventing him from playing this year. What this means is if (I prefer to say when) he signs with State in February 1999, he will be classified as a sophomore and will be able to play three years at State instead of two.

Be back late tomorrow afternoon.

09/26/97 - It seems that The State newspaper (Columbia, SC) doesn't think too highly of us even though we have won three of five since South Carolina's entry into the league in '92. Here's a quote from Thursday's paper:

"The trip to Mississippi State (2-1, 0-1) isn't particularly daunting. Scott Field is one of the smallest stadiums in the SEC, with a capacity of 40,656. And two years ago, during a 4-6-1 season in which the Gamecocks had trouble winning anywhere, they earned a 65-39 victory in Starkville that had Scott Stadium nearly empty long before the final horn."

For a look at the full story, go here.

09/26/97 - As all of you know, I never mention a source's name, nor have I ever shared an email with you unless it was for the Q & A section of my page. However I have never received an email quite like this one. Either this guy has a great sense of humor and wrote this as a joke to entertain me or he was trying to irritate me. Doesn't really matter because it is so funny I decided I had to share it with you guys. The name of the writer and school (it is not Ole Miss or Southern Miss) his email was from will remain anonymous. You will understand why after reading the email. Click here to read it and laugh till your sides hurt.

09/26/97 - There have been several questions about how many scholarships Miss State has available for the upcoming recruiting season. The lastest word is Miss State has a total of 25. If we sign any Juco players during the December early Juco signing period, they will count against the 25.

09/26/97 - Why does MSU and several other football teams line up to the side on an extra point attempt? Because it gives the extra point team a chance to see how the defense is lined up. If it is lined up in a certain way, then the extra point team will attempt to go for two points. Now you know the rest of the story.

09/26/97 - Did you know Head Coach Jackie Sherrill gave two walk-on players, who never played and only needed one more semester to graduate, scholarships which were left over from last year? He could have given them to any number of talented underclassmen walk-ons, but instead he gave them to these two players to help them finish school. Just one of the many nice things Coach Sherrill does that never gets mentioned in the press. This is one of the reasons I am doing this page, to print things like this that you would probably not read anywhere else.

09/25/97 - Holy Cow, my sources tell me MSU may have as many as 100 recruits at the game this Saturday. You would expect with all the other teams playing, there wouldn't be so many visiting MSU, but I have really seen a tremendous resurgence in MSU's recruiting efforts this year. Looks like the high school and junior college players sense it also.

BTW, there will not be a Recruit Walk this Saturday because the game is played so early. You can still get out there and greet the team.

09/25/97 - Here are more players that are considering MSU according to SuperPrep's Pre-Season Magazine:

  • Marc Horton - Memphis, TN., DT, 6-3, 285, 5.0, Schools - Colorado, Kansas, Ala, Memphis, MSU, Illinois.

09/25/97 - I went to MSU's library this past Sunday and found this bit of info. MS Delta CC fullback Rod Gibson (Greenwood, MS) was quoted in the Greenwood Commonwealth as saying "right now, my plans are to be at Mississippi State next year." Here's what MS Delta CC coach Jim Southward says about Rod: "Rod is tough and hard-nosed, but he's got a lot better speed and moves than people realize."

09/24/97 - David Wilson was in Moorhead yesterday and had a great meeting. Several Juco coaches were there. He will be speaking at the Brandon, Miss. 120 Club next Tueday and Meridian sometime in November. If any of you live in these areas and are members of the clubs he will be speaking at, carry a friend with you if it is allowable. If any of you want him to speak at your club meeting, give him a call at 601-325-2534 or email him at dwilson@athletics.msstate.edu. Help David spread the word about MSU football, contact him today.

09/24/97 - According to the rumors heard by a source of mine at last Friday night's New Albany (NA) game, NA's kicker Ross Barkley had a great time on his first unofficial visit to MSU and came away really impressed.

09/24/97 - Here are more player names from SuperPrep's Pre-Season Magazine:

  • Bryant Brooks - Memphis, TN., FS, 6-1, 186, 4.6, Schools - Tenn, Ga, Ala, Aub, Ole Miss, MSU.
  • Glenn Rasheed Moore - Huntsville, AL., DL, 6-4, 250, 5.0, Schools - Ala, MSU, Tenn, Ole Miss, Louisville, UAB.
  • Travis Anglin - Columbus, GA., QB, 6-4, 185, 4.5, Schools - Ga (leader), Ga. Tech, FSU, MSU, Neb, Tenn.

09/23/97 - Here are more player names from SuperPrep's Pre-Season Magazine:

  • David Jacobs - Atlanta, GA., DE, 6-4, 230, 4.7, Schools - Tenn (slight leader), FSU, Michigan, Notre Dame, Miss State, Fla.

09/22/97 - Look's like all of you that complained about the treatment ESPN gave Keffer when he died caught ESPN's attention. click here. Look on the lefthand side down a few inches and note where it says GAME OF THE WEEK. Behind it you see a player with the number 21 on the front of his uniform. Now, that might not be Keffer, but I like to think it is and who can say with absolute certainty it isn't? BTW, I want to publicly thank the person who was observant enough to see it.

09/22/97 - Here's a list of SuperPrep Magazine Pre-Season All-Americans that are considering Miss State:

  • Adam Dunn - 6-4, 235, 4.7, 7th Best QB Nationally, New Caney, TX., Schools - Texas, FSU (co-leaders), Notre Dame, Tenn, Colorado, Texas A&M, Kent, BYU, MSU, Baylor, Arkansas.
  • Lorenzo Diamond - 6-3, 205, 4.6, 15th Best TE Nationally, Biloxi, MS., Schools - Ga. Tech, Baylor, Rice, Miami, FSU, and MSU.

09/21/97 - Here's the latest Skuttle-Butt on Ackerman High's Conner Stephens. The rumor is Conner is most interested in Alabama and Tennessee with Miss State also a possibility. His brother is a student at State. Will this help MSU? Who knows, but it can't hurt if his brother likes MSU. Supposedly, his parents don't like Ole Miss so they may be out of the picture, although he did camp there this past summer. Like I said, this is a rumor I heard from an Ackerman source.

09/20/97 - I was told there is a rumor going around that Pontotoc HS's outstanding player Nick Floyd may have taken MSU off his list of schools he is considering because MSU will not attempt to get his brother Cameron Floyd a medical redshirt. This rumor is fiction, folks!! Cameron was redshirted his true freshman year and is a fifth year senior this year. He has used up all of his eligibility.

09/19/97 - Here's the lastest update on MSU's Juco signees:

  • James Johnson - Playing very well while alternating at RB with Robert Issac.
  • Kevin Prentiss - Starting and playing very well.
  • Randy Thomas - Starting offensive lineman and playing very well.
  • Craig Moore - Playing well while coming back from an injury.
  • Kevin Cooper - Still recuperating. At about 80%. Just needs to add strength to his injured leg.
  • Garth Henry - Plans are for him to be redshirted. Playing on the defensive side of the football.
  • Ed Smith - As he learns the MSU defense, he will get more playing time.
  • Bert Keys - Still learning MSU's defense. Hopefully, will get more and more playing time as the season progress.
  • 09/19/97 - A source of mine emailed me that Madison Central's outstanding offensive lineman Scott Perkins would like to be a MSU Bulldog. My source, who talked to Scott after the Memphis game, also told me that Scott is a great kid, who is every bit as big as he is listed on my page. According to my source, in last weeks' game, Scott dominated the right side of the line against a very good Grenada defense.

09/18/97 - I read in The Clarion-Ledger Wednesday that MSU "only" had 190 recruits in this past Saturday, instead of the 350 as I earlier reported. Looks like I was wrong on my count, but I have to think that 190 isn't too shabby. Especially considering it appeared to be most of the very best players in the Mississippi High School and Junior College ranks. Great job David Wilson and MSU coaches. Looks like you guys have it on the ball.

I also read in the C-L that college coaches can't go to HS or JC games until the start of October. What a stupid NCAA rule. The season is half over by then. Guess that means you guys will have to help our coaches evaluate the players. Keep sending the info to David Wilson and me. I'll do my part to make sure Mississippi's best get the attention they deserve.

09/16/97 - The MSU - South Carolina game will be televised by Jefferson Pilot and has been moved to 11:40 a.m. to accomodate them.

09/16/97 - The outstanding New Albany kicker Ross Barkley was at the MSU-LSU game. I was told by a source of mine that he wants to go to a school where he will have a chance to play defense as well as kick. All you recruiters better write this down. I've seen him play defense; he has good potential if he adds the necessary muscle to his frame.

09/15/97 - Here are some names of players that were at the MSU-LSU game this past Saturday night: Dicenzo Miller (Weir), T.T. Tolivar (Hinds CC), Bo Williams (Aberdeen), Chris Jones (West Point), Sam Townsend (Winona), Jonathan Herrod (Calhoun City), Alex Taylor (Quitman), Tanner Allen (New Albany), Justin Hollis (New Albany), Neal Thomas (Clinton), Patrick Burchfield (Maben). Thought you might be interested.

09/14/97 - I just found out that MSU football player Eric Allen's grandfather died of a heart attack last night at the game. Eric was told at halftime. I speak for all MSU fans and alumni when I say our thoughts and prayers are with the Allen family at this tragic time in their lives. If you would like to send your condolences by email, send them to David Wilson and I'm sure he will pass them on to Eric and his family.

With the loss of Eric's grandfather, Mr. Hartley and Keffer McGee the MSU family has had more than it's share of tragedy, but we all have to stand firm in the belief that God has a plan and knows what is best.

09/14/97 - As some of you may know, the Unofficial Auburn Recruiting Page maintained by Bob Lowry has temporarily, hopefully, been suspended because of a possible NCAA rule violation that states a university staff member can't talk about players that the university is recruiting. I for one sincerely hope Bob and his site will be back up very soon. I consider Bob a friend even though we have never met and believe he is the father, for lack of a better word, of all the online recruiting sites on the internet, including mine. Bob, all recruiting sites on the internet own you a debt of gratitude and I hope you are back online very soon.

09/14/97 - This really has nothing to do with MSU sports but I thought all of you would like to know that MSU has raised $143, 281,060 by way of the MSU Campaign for Giving. This was announced at the football game last night.

09/14/97 - Although Miss State lost their first game of the season, there were some bright spots. The play of quarterback Matt Wyatt improved (14-28, 160+ yards). The defense looked good in the first half. In the second half LSU ran a in-your-face smash mouth football sweep play to perfection. Their blockers blocked and their runners ran hard and well. We also committed several crucial penalties which hurt very badly. We can play better and will. MSU now has a well deserved open date to prepare for a struggling South Carolina team.

Other game notes: Recruit Walk went much better than last time and I am very proud of that. Considering the number of recruits we had unofficially visiting (350 is what my sources told me. I'll talk about this later), that was a major plus. I saw the recruits go by and by and by and all of you that were at the Recruit Walk did make a difference. They appeared to really be enjoying the attention. After they went by, Mary Ann and a couple of friends of ours sat near the sign-in table and even more recruits, who didn't participate in the walk with the other recruits, showed up. The recruits were from Alabama, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi (A very small sample of Mississippi high schools and junior colleges I could read from the recruits tags were as follows: Greenville HS, Calhoun City HS, Weir HS, Ackerman HS, Clinton HS, New Albany HS, Macon HS, West Point HS, Maben HS, Quitman HS, Winona HS, New Hope HS, Ripley HS, Holmes CC, Hinds CC, Northeast CC, East MS CC, and many, many others I couldn't read). So even though we lost the game, I really believe, because of the great game atmosphere, the great crowd, national television (ESPN) and the many fans greeting the players, this will be a very beneficial day for MSU football recruiting. 350 players. Truly amazing. And people say MSU has lost it's Mississippi HS connections. Guess that was proven wrong last night, wouldn't you say?

09/14/97 - According to a source of mine, here are several Co-Lin CC players who are or should be drawing interest from D-I schools:

  • Kenmantel Davis, Hazlehurst, MS. 6'1" 225 lbs. Linebacker. Led Wolves in tackles as a freshman. Nickname "Animal". Auburn has showed much interest.

  • Ashley Cooper, Ft. Walton Beach, FL. 6'0" 195 lb. Strong Safety. Leader of Wolfpack secondary. Florida St. wanted out of high school, and are still interested.

  • Carlos Smith, Brookhaven, MS. 6'6" 245 lbs. Defensive End. Great Technique Player. On CLCC Basketball Team. Mississippi State and Memphis showing interest.

  • Lawrence Thomas, Franklin, MS. 5'9" 175 lbs. Cornerback. Awesome cover man. Kick Blocking Specialist. Got 6 blocks in 96. Auburn has expressed interest.

  • Jeremy Clark, Magee, MS. 6'0" 205 lbs. Free Safety. Very physical player with great hands. Mississippi State has shown interest.

  • Torrey Barnes, Monticello, MS. 6'2" 275 lbs. Defensive Tackle. Not heavily recruited. Anchor in D-line that held Delta to 30 yards rushing on 32 carries. A recruiting gemstone. Someone better find him.

09/14/97 - A player that Miss State has, supposedly, offered to is 6-2, 180-lb, WR/DB Alvin Powell of Rome (GA) HS. He is also interested in Alabama. To the source who emailed me this info, please email me your email address so that I can contact you. When I tried to email you a thank you, it would not go through. Thanks for the info.

09/10/97 - Recruit Walk route: The recruits walk out of the Bryan Building at 6:30 p.m. They go around Humphrey Coliseum (where I hope a lot of you are tailgating), then walk down Collegeview Street until they get to the south end of the stadium (5 Points Intersection). They then turn left and enter through the M-Club entrance. If you are going to be at Recruit Walk, please start the line at the M-Club entrance and work your way back to the Bryan Building. Let's Walk the Walk, not just Talk the Talk.

09/10/97 - Here are the names of a couple more recruits who were at the game this past Saturday; Linebacker/Strong Safety Michael Bailey of East Miss CC (via New Hope, MS) and 6-4, 270 DL Alvin McKinley (Dennis Mckinley's brother) of Holmes CC. BTW, Michael was very excited to be at MSU and was yelling for them. I saw this kid play last Thursday night. He is a very good player who is a leader on the field.

09/09/97 - Recruit Walk - Part II starts at 6:30 p.m. this Saturday night. The recruits will be leaving the Bryan Building at that time. I will post the exact route Wednesday morning. Please help out and greet these players. All indications lead to me believe that this will be an extremely big recruiting weekend for Miss State. Let's do our part. As I stated before, do not give any recruit anything but your cheers and greetings.

I will be going to Chicago early Wedneday morning and will not be back until Friday afternoon, so I can't help organize the Recruit Walk (considering the poor attendance last time, that might be for the best). Hope you guys help me out by doing as much as you can to get the fans out. Tell everyone you know about it and put up flyers on every bulletin board on MSU's campus. BTW, Mary Ann will update Thursday. The update Friday will be late Friday night.

P.S. - Why don't some of you tailgate around the coliseum. At the last Recruit Walk the only fans anywhere near OUR coliseum were Memphis fans. That is our coliseum, not Memphis' or LSU's, so how surrounding it with maroon and white, OK?

09/08/97 - Just found out that Maben HS's outstanding senior QB/S Patrick Burchfield unofficially visited Miss State this past weekend. That is at least the second time he has visited Miss State the past several weeks. In my opinion, this kid is one of the top sleepers in the state this year. Here are some of his attributes: he is a great kid, has 4.5-4.55 speed, is very quick, a leader on the field and loves to play the game. Ole Miss, Arkansas State and Miss State are giving him the most attention, although Southern Miss has also contacted him.

09/07/97 - I would like to clear up something that has been a minor irritate for me for a while. Some MSU fans seem to think Coach Sherrill cannot remember his players names so he just mentions their numbers when talking about them during his postgame show. Someone asked him about this after the game Saturday. His answer was he got into this habit quite a few years ago because people remember seeing numbers during a game, not the names of the players, so he felt it would be easier just to say the numbers when talking about the players. I was at this year's annual Bulldog Club meeting and he rattled off players names without any hesitation at all. This is another one of the Jackie Sherrill rumors that people think is true because they hear it over and over. This is another example of people misunderstanding Coach Sherrill because they make an inaccurate assumption based on inaccurate information. Just a little something I wanted to get off my chest.

09/07/97 - I'm not going to go into great detail about the game since there are a lot of locations on the internet where you can read about the game, including the Miss State message board. I'll just say a little and leave it at that.

    1) The team didn't quit after the first half. Kentucky played well and deserved to be leading at halftime. However the second half was a different story. I don't know if we came back with a different attitude or we just wore Kentucky down. All I know is we looked really good the second half. This team is one you will never believe is out of a game because they don't quit no matter what the score is.

    2) For all of you who believe these self-serving statements that Coach Sherrill is ignoring the future for the present by signing too many Juco players, would you rather be playing against Kevin Prentiss and James Johnson or have them on your team? I thought so. I hope Jackie continues to sign outstanding Jucos. There's too much talent in the Juco ranks not to. Read my High School Skuttle-Butt section to see what I am talking about (have no juco section, so I put it in the HS section).

    3) Matt Wyatt played much better today. Hopefully, the WRs will improve. Hope Kevin Cooper will be a factor soon. If he is as good as advertised, opposing team's secondaries will have a tough time defending MSU.

    4) Hats off to Barrin Simpson for taking up the slack for Greg Favors who wasn't in the Kentucky backfield as often as I expected.

    5) There were between 60 and 70 prospective recruits at the game (located from the 20 to 50-yard lines), including Starkville's Freddie Milons. Near the end of the game about 15 were standing up and cheering the Bulldogs on. Make sure you guys compliment David Wilson (his email address is at the top of this page) for doing such a good job getting these recruits in for unofficial visits. He is doing an outstanding job. Just think about this; if we continue to have about 60 to 70 recruits in for each game, that will be between 420 to 490 for the entire season. Make sure you NEVER boo any time during any game this season. That DOES affect how these recruits view your university despite what some of you may think. We need to be a help, not a hindrance to our coach's recruiting efforts. BTW, I will attempt to have Recruit Walk again this Saturday. I need help organizing it. Any of you who are in a fraternity, how about getting your fraternity members out there to greet the recruits. Also, I would like to see flyers put up on any bulletin boards on campus. I will give the time and place of the walk early next week. Anybody can Talk the Talk, but real fans will Walk the Walk. Will you?

    6) 30,000+ fans! We are 2-0 against two quality opponents; have some of the most exciting players in the league; very exciting defense; bringing in the recruits in droves; have one of the premiere head coaches in the country and great assistant coaches; probably headed to a bowl game. If you didn't come to the game but could have, you ought to be ashamed of yourself? Our players played their hearts out and you didn't come because you wanted to watch it on the television or the tickets are too expensive. Garbage! Fill that stadium! P.S. - Thanks to the loyal 30,000+ fans. You are loyal Bulldog fans.

09/06/97 - According to a source of mine, Pascagoula's outstanding defensive back Reggie Myles is a strong lean to LSU. Reggie is impressed with MSU's academic accomplishments ( 7 years, 70 graduation rate), but, as of now, that isn't enough to cause him to seriously consider MSU.

09/04/97 - For those of you who have asked, the reason Miss State has not added the 7/70 patch to their uniforms is because the NCAA has, up to this point, decided it is against their rules. Something about not allowing numbers on jerseys or helments. Miss State will continue trying. BTW, did you know only six other schools (besides Miss State) have graduated 70% of their football players each year for more than six years in a row. Spread the word, folks. This is something we can all take a lot of pride in.

This is also the reason the Bulldogs could not put Keffer's McGee's number on their uniform. They, instead, had to put his name on their uniforms.

09/04/97 - Just wanted to thank Gene Walker and Tom Brown of the Forest, Mississippi Rotary Club for inviting David Wilson to their meeting yesterday to talk MSU football. From what I was told by people at the meeting, there were several high school principals, counselors and football coaches at the meeting. If there are any more of you out there that has an upcoming meeting, contact David Wilson at his email address at the top of this page or my front page. One of his jobs is spreading the word about MSU football, so let's make him work overtime doing just that.

09/04/97 - Update: The Chis Schenkle award that Jack Cristil won was only the second time it had been awarded. This is a very prestigious award, not a yearly award as I made it sound.

09/04/97 - The latest word is the outstanding Juco offensive lineman transfer Craig Moore will be able to play this weekend.

09/04/97 - Remember this name, Michael Bailey of EMCC (via New Hope, MS). Michael was a 5-11, 189-lb RB/LB in high school. Very surehanded and a great kid, according to my source. His dream is to play for State one day.

09/04/97 - Words of wisdom from one of you. Take them to heart and BE AT THE GAME:

I was thinking very seriously last night about the 33,000 who showed up last Saturday. I read on the MSU Football--Game Notes page "State officials expect a crowd of 32,000-plus for the team's conference opener." Gene, I know you will be there, but you may need to post a note on the daily scuttle-butt page. There are 4 good reasons to go to the game and not watch it on TV.

Close Game: During the last 3 home games, the margin of victory has been 3 points or less. There was the famous one point win over Alabama. Arkansas won by a field goal in OT. We all know what happened last Saturday. Jeff Sagarin's NCAA football ratings in the USA Today (http://www.usatoday.com/sports/football/sfc/sfcjs.htm) for this week rank Kentucky at 58 with a power rating of 71.92. Meanwhile, Mississippi State ranks at 51. Their power rating is 73.43. They are virtually even. Also the SEC Offensive and Defensive Players of the week will face each other. It should be a great game.

Home Field Advantage: The Dogs cannot hear living room cheers. You cannot distract the visiting team from the living room. Coming to a game may be cheaper than a casino trip. It is also a wholesome activity for the entire family.

Bowl Posturing: Let’s face it right now MSU is looking to go bowling. What bowl officials in their right mind would invite a team that can fill only 75% of their 40,000 seat stadium? MSU fans need to demonstrate that they will follow their team at home or away, with or without TV, regardless of opponent.

Athletic Department Revenue: MSU cannot continue to compete with the Alabama’s, Florida’s and Tennessee’s if we can put only 30,000 fans into Scott Field. Let’s do some math. 33,310 paid $20 to see MSU-Memphis. The gate was $666,200. Compare that to the 81,591 that paid $26 to see Alabama play Houston. The gate was $2,121,366. The Alabama crowd was small compared to Tennessee and Florida. I do not know how much Tennessee and Florida charge per ticket. Alabama charges' $26 and the stadium is full. We will never be on a level playing field. When we fill Scott Field, the Athletic Dept. reaps another $200K. I will not elaborate about how the revenue loss forces Larry Templeton to decide which sports we can even field a team.

You know he is right fellow Bulldog fans.

09/03/97 - According to a source of mine, Co-Lin CC offensive lineman Joey Hydrick is being looked at by Miss State. Joey is 6-2, 275-lbs with 5.2 speed in the forty.

09/03/97 - MSU's Greg Favors was chosen SEC Defensive Player of the Week after making 12 tackles (2 sacks). And remember, the 2 sacks were against a fast quarterback. He now has 6 1/2 sacks in his last two games (Memphis this season and Ole Miss last season). If Kentucky wants to win this weekend they had better have some very quick offensive linemen because Greg gets from here to there quicker than I can type it.

BTW, the report on Kentucky is they are very good. The defensive linemen are smaller but team speed is quicker than last year. Look for them to throw 50 times if we can't keep them off the field. I've got a copy of their Media Guide. I'll post info from it the next couple of days.

09/01/97 - Here are several pictures of the pregame remembrance of Keffer McGee and Mr. Bob Hartley: Keffer 1, Keffer 2, Keffer 3, Mr. Bob Hartley. Sorry, the pictures aren't any better.

09/01/97 - For those of you who haven't seen this anywhere; MSU's own Jack Cristil was awarded the Chris Schenkel Award for 1996 at the August 15thCollege Football Hall of Fame banquet. The award, which is a national broadcasting award named for the ABC Sports commentator, is presented to an outstanding broadcaster who is affiliated with one professional team or school, no national network broadcasters. Congrats, Jack. The nation now knows what we have known for a long time; you are the best.

09/01/97 - Who is my most remote reader you asked? OK, so you didn't ask, but here he is anyway. How about Everett Busby, BS Petroleum Engineering (MSU 1979), who checks out my page in Almaty, Kazakhstan, a former Russian State, which, according to Everett, is 12 time zones away from MSU. He is currently working there for Mobil Oil until October 22nd. I'm sure he would like to hear from you, so drop him an email at Busby_Ely/dal9_eebusby@dal.mobil.com
