1998-1999 MSU Basketball Recruiting Prospects.

05/30/98 - The Michael Gholar rumor is not a rumor but fact. He will be in summer school and living in a dorm. There have been so many rumors flying about Gholar, but it appears he will be playing for the Bulldogs come next basketball season.

05/29/98 - The rumor is Michael Gholar has signed up for summer school at Miss State. It is also rumored that he will be staying in one of the dorms.

I'll see if I can confirm this rumor.

05/29/98 - By the way, if you haven't purchased one of former Final Four Dawg Russell Walters' tapes or CDs, you are missing out on a real bargain. Click on his banner at the top of the page and print off the order form and mail it in today. If you are a country music fan, you are really missing out.

05/27/98 - As usual, a source comes through for us. Midland, Texas, basketball player Charlie Tatum (a player MSU is rumored to be looking at) is a 5-9 point guard who helped lead the Midland HS Bulldogs to the 1998 Texas Class 5A State Championship. Tatum was named the MVP of the final game during which Midland defeated San Antonio Taft HS. He averaged 21 ppg, 5 assists and 5 steals. Midland's record was 36-2 (1 loss due to a forfeit for using an ineligible player). Look for Tatum to be very heavily recruited by the Texas schools. If the Bulldogs are looking at this kid, I expect it is going to be tough to get him out of the state of Texas.

05/26/98 - OK, all of you Texas sources, I've got an assignment for you. I need as much info on Midland HS basketball player Charlie Tatum as you can find: Stats, honors, etc.

05/25/98 - According to a source of mine, rumors are floating around Starkville that Michael Gholar has qualified. Does anyone know if this is true?

05/23/98 - According to a Jackson, Mississippi, source close to the Alonzo Lane situation, Alonzo decided, since his strong preference for Miss State had been publicly mentioned and most schools had backed off because of it, it was best to go ahead and publicly announce for Miss State. I have to admit, while I regret (a little), like my source, Alonzo did not get the opportunity to enjoy the recruiting process, I am extremely glad he has decided to cast his lot with MSU. He and Picayune's Jonathan Bender are the top two players in one of the best high school classes in Mississippi ever.

05/23/98 - If you want to see the latest list of MSU basketball recruiting prospects, visit Gene's Page MSU Basketball Recruiting Prospects. This is a tentative list. I'm sure more names will be added as the summer progresses.

05/23/98 - Have you purchased your Russell Walters tape or CD? If not click here.

05/22/98 - First my apologies to Quentin Smith for yesterday's post. Obviously, my comparison of him and MSU signee Ontario Harper should have never been posted the way I posted it on my page. My source contacted me by email and asked me to telephone him, which I did. After talking to him, I understood what the coach actually meant. He actually felt that Quentin would not come into the SEC and be a star his first year. Most fans (including me) and several recruiting analysts thought he would. The coach, according to my source, felt that Quentin had the talent to be a very good player in the SEC. He just feels that Ontario has a chance to be something special earlier in his career because of his great athleticism. My post made it sound like Quentin was not a good player. It was my mistake and I apologize to Quentin.

BTW, I didn't read my message board until I got home Thursday night. This was after I talked to my source. Neither he or I knew about all of the bantering going on back and forth about my statement about Quentin. As far as my thoughts about Quentin the person, I feel MSU lost an outstanding person and student when he decided to transfer to USM. I truly admire him for what he has accomplished under the extremely difficult circumstances he has had to endure. My 5/21/98 statement had nothing to do with Quentin the person.

05/21/98 - A source of mine is friend's with a Mississippi high school head basketball coach and he was told by this coach that MSU signee Ontario Harper is a tremendous talent who will be great in college. Why I mention this is because this coach was one of the very, very few who said former MSU player Quentin Smith was not as good as everybody thought. It turned out he was correct. Let's hope he is also correct about future Bulldog Ontario Harper.

05/16/98 - The word from sources close to the situation is Alonzo Lane wants to enjoy the recruiting process before he publicly commits. That supposedly is why he decided he wasn't ready to publicly commit to MSU. We sure can't blame him for that.

05/15/98 - I haven't read The Clarion-Ledger this morning but the word I hear is that there will be an Alonzo Lane article in it. Supposedly, it will state that he hasn't committed to Miss State just yet. It also is supposed to say that he is worried that the rumor that he has committed to MSU will scare off other schools. Like I said, I haven't read The Clarion-Ledger this morning, so I can't confirm this. Pick up a Clarion-Ledger and see for yourself. I sure plan to.

05/14/98 - According to a solid source of mine, WJTV in Jackson, Mississippi, reported last night that Canton's big man Alonzo Lane (6-6, 235) has verbally commiteed to the Dawgs for next years signing class. It was also reported that Conference Call has stated the same thing. Their info comes from Keith Easterwood.

05/12/98 - Coach Stansbury had several comments at the Tupelo Bulldog Club event Monday night:

  • Mississippi high school players: Mississippi State may not the be the best place for every player, but for Mississippi High School players it is the best place in America.
  • Be positive about Miss State at all times.
  • Buy tickets. If you can't make a game, make sure a fellow Bulldog fan who will be going to the game uses your ticket. (He really emphasized this.)
  • There will be more entertaining things going on during pre-game, timeouts and halftime. A spotlight will be used when the players are introduced. The music will also be changed.
  • Nobody will work harder than he and his staff.
  • There will be a basketball game the Wednesday before the Miss State/ Ole Miss football game.
  • It may be late in the summer before we know whether Tyrus Boswell will be eligible. He was very confident that Tyrus will be academically eligible when it is all said and done. He also expects Robert Jackson (6-9, 255) to be eligible. They both have a lot of potential.
  • Miss State will press more because of it's good perimeter depth.
  • Signee Joe Marshall has two things he likes in a player: He can shoot and he is a very tough player.
  • Although they aren't required to, all of the present players will attend both summer schools sessions.
  • Get excited folks. Things are going to be rocking at the Hump this coming season.

05/11/98 - Recruiting Beat has Miss State signees ranked nationally as follows: Robert Jackson 37th and Tyrus Boswell 39th.

05/10/98 - MSU signee Robert Jackson was selected to Future Stars 4th team All-America team (7th best center, 32nd best player nationally). Miss State's other high school signee Ontario Harper was selected to the 10th team (96th best player). BTW, Ole Miss signee David Sanders was also selected to the 10th team (95th best player).

05/07/98 - Here is some info from the Bulldog Club event held last Thursday night:

  • Coach Stansbury said Ontario Harper will go to prep school which was agreed upon by his parents when he signed with State.
  • According to Stansbury, all of the other signees should qualify. This info comes directly from their respective coaches.
  • Stansbury wants to have a rotating game each year to be alternately played at Tupelo, Jackson and Biloxi.
  • He also said the player introductions will be changed.
  • 05/06/98 - According to a friend of mine, MSU head coach Rick Stansbury was on Jack Cristil's radio show last week and said Miss State is interested in three of Mississippi juniors. Because of NCAA rules, he couldn't say which three juniors he is interested in, but you have to assume two of the three are Canton's 6-7 Alonzo Lane and Picayune's 6-11 Jonathan Bender.

05/04/98 - I saw this in The Clarion-Ledger Sunday (Article by Rusty Hampton):

The November 17th basketball opener for Miss State will be played at the Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson, Mississippi because of the renovation of Humphrey Coliseum. The opponent has not been finalized at this time. This will be the first time State has played in Jackson since 1987. Miss State has tentatively scheduled it's two other November games (21st & 25th) at the Tupelo Coliseum. Two campus exhibition games will be played at either McCarthy Gym or the Newell-Grissom Building.

The renovation of Humphrey Coliseum will add 1,000 seats, improve the lighting and replace the ceiling. There is a possibility that, with the improvements, Miss State will add an overhead scoreboard, possibly after the 1998-1999 season.

05/02/98 - Very reliable sources say that Miss State will not use the remaining scholarship this year. For those of us who thought Miss State was really serious about Donald Emmanuel, we were wrong. According to my source, Miss State already has the power forward they wanted --- the outstanding Tyrus Boswell.

05/02/98 - Former Bulldog basketball player Russell Walters has placed an ad on my page. If you are interested in quality country music, visit his page. He has several hundred tapes and CDs for sale. Plus, he will entertain at your party. If you never got to thank him for his contributions to our Final Four team, now is your chance.

05/01/98 - Here is the latest word on future Miss State basketball player Michael Gholar. According to someone who plays basketball on the D-I college level, Gholar is the most complete basketball player this person has ever seen. This person said he has the complete package, inside and outside.
