08/29/97 - Here's a little info I heard yesterday; MSU signee Oral Roberts has extremely quick feet for a big man. He will be one of the few big men in the SEC who has the potential to matchup with Ole Miss forward Ansau Seay. Oral is also a very good shooter. Look for him to be one of the best newcomers in the SEC this season.
08/23/97 - Basketball practice starts October 18th, which is on a Saturday. No word as to whether there will be a Midnight Madness. Contact the basketball office at 601-325-3800 if you interested in it this year.
08/23/97 - A source of mine talked to former Bulldog Marcus Bullard very recently and Marcus told him that he is seriously considering playing for Kentucky Wesleyan. He was scheduled to visit there Friday. Marcus, who has played in several pick-up games against and with the current MSU players, also told my source that he feels MSU has a chance to be great this year. He is very impressed with Detric White. In fact, his exact words were "he is fantastic." Marcus also said he will always love Mississippi State.
08/22/97 - Here are some things Associate Head Basketball Coach Rick Stansbury mentioned at the Attala-Choctaw Co Alumni meeting of Aug 21 at Kosciusko....
Coach Stansbury stated he is very excited about the upcoming season. Some highlights were: (1) Contrary to rumors, Trey Moore is doing fine with academics, and is expected to be a much better player this year. (2) There is much excitement about all the newcomers, and ALL of the JUCO transfers have a chance to compete for starting positions. He stated Oral Roberts has a great personality and will be a fan favorite! (3) Due to better depth this year, the staff expects to be better able to utilize players according to their best roles, etc....
BTW, this meeting was attended by around 120 Bulldog fans and was a very enjoyable meeting, according to my source.
08/21/97 - Marcus Bullard confirmed that he will not be attending MSU. Tuesday, he told The Clarion-Ledger's Rusty Hampton that he is looking at four schools, all Division-II schools. He said he will make a decision sometime next week.
08/21/97 - The latest info on Clinton's Ontario Harper is he did not enjoy his recent official visit to Miami. He, according to my source, would really like to play on the same team with MSU basketball players Tang Hamilton and T. J. Billups and present Conners State CC (by way of Lanier HS) player Shannon Long, a player MSU is looking at.
08/21/97 - Here's some info from someone who had a chance to watch most of MSU's basketball players in a recent pickup game. Here are his observations: "Detrick White was hitting NBA range 3's consistantly. Tang Hamilton was also impressive despite being guarded by veteran Horatio Webster. Oral Roberts is an explosive leaper with loads of raw talent."
08/17/97 - According to MISSISSIPPI HOOPS' Kevin Henderson, Miss State's recruiting class was number 1 in the SEC and 10th nationally. He predicts signee Detric White will be newcomer-of-the-year in the SEC. In fact, he believes Detric was one of the five best guards in the entire college ranks (D-I or Juco) last year. How good does former Bulldog player Darryl Wilson think Detric is? His own words were "he is better than me." Kevin Henderson also mentioned that signeeTodd Myles has laser like quickness. Another MSU player he is extremely high on is Oral Roberts, who he calls a very explosive player similar to former MSU players Cameron Burns and Dontae' Jones.
08/16/97 - According to MISSISSIPPI HOOPS' Kevin Henderson, who talked to Marcus Bullard a couple of days ago, Marcus has decided not to return to Miss State and will instead play basketball at a D-II school in Indiana.
08/15/97 - According to a source of mine, MSU AD Larry Templeton annouced plans for a facelift of Humphrey Coliseum. It will add about 1,000 seats to the lower deck. It will also include new restrooms and other improvements. This will be done after this basketball season and will require the Hump to be closed for about 6 months.
08/14/97 - This is a quote from a source who had the opportunity to watch Horatio Webster and MSU signee Detric White play at Conners State CC when they were there at the same time: "I'd have to say Detric White is the best juco point guard I've ever seen as far as pure play-making goes. Add him to the mix with Horatio and - wow - they are back in business. Their combo was virtually unstoppable at the juco level. Some sort of ESP action going on."
08/12/97 - CNN/SI is reporting that the Golden State Warriors have traded forward/guard Chris Mullins to the Indiana Pacers for forward Duane Ferrell and (former MSU) center Erick Dampier.
08/09/97 - Bulldog Club Meeting basketball tidbits: According to Coach Richard Williams,, MSU basketball signees Todd Myles and Oral Roberts will report this weekend. He also talked about the upcoming season's schedule of which he said was a little more favorable than last year's, although it is still a fairly tough schedule. He did mentioned that the first six SEC games are going to be very tough and not to get down on the Bulldogs if they don't do very well in these games (3-3 would be good according to Richard). He expects them to do much better once they get those six games out of the way.
08/05/97 - Here's the latest news on former Bulldog great Darryl Wilson. Darryl, in the last few days, headed to Iceland to play ball.
08/05/97 - Former Bulldog Marcus Grant is presently in Starkville visiting friends and relatives. In September he will be heading back to Europe to play ball. He told a friend of mine he had a chance to play several pickup games with some of the newcomers and he was very impressed with what he saw.
08/01/97 - Received this yesterday via email. This is a word by word quote: " I have seen Marckell Patterson and Detric White play a few times, and I was really impressed with both of them. Detric has amazing athletic ability. One very hot day they had been playing at Newell-Grissom for a couple of hours, keep in mind this building has no air conditioning, and as everyone else was dragging off the floor covered in sweat, Detric was doing reverse dunks and such."
I tell you what guys, this is going to be some kind of sports year at Miss State. We are talking football, basketball and baseball all at the same time. And we are talking about things such as bowl games, NCAA basketball, and hosting another regional at Dudy Noble Field.
