01/31/97 - Even during an off year, by Miss State standards, we continue to be the leader in the Western Division of the SEC. Richard Williams, one of the two best coaches in the SEC hands down, has built Miss State into one of the most consistant teams in the SEC. And look for Miss State to be back in the "Sweet 16" next year. When you add two national top 45 signees; Tyrus Boswell, the top rebounder in the country and Tang Hamilton, the third straight number 1 player in Missississppi signed by Miss State, and Todd Myles, the 13th best player in high school two years ago, to what we already have, you have a potentially powerful team. Also look for Miss State to sign the top JUCO point guard, Detric White, during the Spring signing period. Richard continues to amaze me with what he has done at State.
01/31/97 - Here's the latest Todd Myles update from Howie Stalwick, sports editor for the Coeur d'Alene Press. Todd's per game averages are as follows: 11.9 points, 9.1 assists, 2.5 steals, 3.8 rebounds and 3.1 turnovers. He is the league assist leader by a wide margin. According to Howie, he plays better when the competition is better. As an example, he is averaging 2.9 steals per game in conference games. His team is now 13th in the nation.
01/30/97 - Last night, Miss State beat LSU 68-60 at Baton Rouge. It is Miss State's first SEC road victory. I sure hope the old saying is true: "If you can't beat them, join them". Since Richard Williams can beat them, there's no point in joining them. Richard, the best place for you is Miss State, not LSU.
01/30/97 - The tall white kid at the game may very well have been Kirk Haston. Doesn't really matter now, since he has just committed to Indiana.
01/29/97 - This is only a rumor at this point! I have heard there is a possiblity that Whit Hughes may skip his senior year and go to grad school elsewhere. If this happens, this will open up a scholarship for Cedric Wallace, if he passes his physical.
01/29/97 - Did anyone notice a tall white kid with a flat top behind the Bulldog bench at the game Saturday? If anyone has any info on him, please email me. I'm wondering if this was Kirk Haston from Tennessee.
01/27/97 - Tyrus Boswell latest report card was very good. He appears to be OK with his core GPA. Now, he will have to take the ACT one or two times to get his ACT to 17. Stay tuned.............
01/26/97 - Vanderbilt and Miss State game info.
01/26/97 - A friend of mine recently received a letter from Marcus Bullard. In the letter, he wrote some things he would like to convey to all of the members of the Mississippi State University family:
He wants to apologize to each and every one of you for what he did. He knows it was wrong and he is truly sorry for doing it. He is paying the price for his actions and he hopes each one of you can find it in your heart to forgive him for those actions. He also wants to thank all of you that have sent him cards and letters, because it has meant a great deal to him. No matter what the future holds, he will always consider himself a Mississippi State Bulldog and he is proud he is a part of the Bulldog family.
01/24/97 - Ontario Harper, the top junior player in Mississippi, is very interested in Miss State. Stay tuned........
01/24/97 - Future Stars has joined the Tyrus Bowell bandwagan. They now say he is a national top 50 player.
01/22/97 - Clark Francis of Hoop Scoop has decided to put Tyrus Boswell in his national top 40. Well, it's about dog gone time! If he had looked at my page, he would have done it long ago. Better late than never I guess. He also mentioned that Tyrus is a monster on the boards and a steal for Mississippi State. Well, I guess with those comments, I can forgive him. Now, if we can only get the guy eligible.............
01/22/96 - Tang Hamilton is averaging 20.3 points per game for the season.
01/22/97 - Tyrus Boswell scored 9 pts and had 7 rebs in a game against the top ranked team in Alabama, West End HS. His team lost 58-50. He got his third personal foul with a minute left in the first period and was taken out of the game at that point. He came back in in the first half with 4:12 left in the half. His coach said that was the first time he can ever remember that Tyrus did not score in double figures.
01/20/97 - What do the Columbus, MS. sports writers think about the possibility that Richard Williams will leave Miss State for LSU. Read these two articles.
01/20/97 - I have been meaning to put an article about the Miss State victory over Ole Miss by The Clarion-Ledger columnist Rick Cleveland on this page ever since I saw it, but I didn't have enough time until today. Go to this location to read it.
01/20/97 - Here's the latest on Todd Myles:
In his last game he scored 23 points, 10-18 from the field and 2-4 from the free throw line.
His per game stats are as follows:
His shooting %:
Before all of you say he isn't much of a shooter, remember, Magic Johnson wasn't much of a shooter while in college but he was a great point guard. That is why everybody is so high on Todd; he is a tremendous point guard who makes everybody around him reach their potential.
01/20/97 The Clarion-Ledger has finally gotten around to mentioning how good Tyrus Boswell is. In Sunday's sports section Rusty Hampton said if Tyrus gets eligible he can give State immediate help next year in the paint. They mentioned that he had games of 40 pts, 29 rebs and 29 pts, 25 rebs in the Reebok Classic at Las Vagas.
01/19/97 - In a losing effort against Jackson Murrah, Tang Hamilton scored 17 points.
01/14/97 - The NCAA is having its annual convention in Nashville this week. Some of the measures before the convention: adding a 14th scholarship for men's basketball, revoke undergraduates' right to enter the NBA draft without jeopardizing their eligibility and declaring e-mail and fax communications as direct contact with high school prospects.
01/14/97 - A friend of mine went to see Tyrus Boswell play recently and he said Tyrus is everything we have heard. He has a complete game, extremely quick, very athletic move to the basket, can play facing the basket or with his back to it. He is also a good kid who will never cause MSU a lick of trouble. The only problem, according to the people at Mountain Brook, is Tyrus has only a slim chance of qualifying. But the good news is he will remain loyal to Miss State, and if he doesn't qualify, he will go to a prep school and then re-sign with Miss State next year.
In the last game my friend saw Tyrus play, Tyrus was matched up against a 6-9 center and was double teamed most of the night and still played quite good.
01/14/97 - The NCAA Convention is this week. One of the proposals on the agenda is adding back one scholarship for men's basketball.
01/12/97 - Here's Kevin Henderson's top ten players from the south:
1) Marcus Fizer - 6-7 230 PF, Arcadia, LA. Signed with Iowa State
2) Edwin "Greedy" Daniels - 6-1 175 PG, Cohen, LA. Signed with UNLV
3) Dion Glover - 6-4 190 2G, Ellenwood, GA. Leaning to Georgia with Tulane second
4) Tyrus Boswell - 6-7 235 PF, Mountain Brook, AL. Signed with MSU
5) Tony Harris - 5-11 175 PG, Memphis, TN. Signed with Tenn
6) Shannon Foreman - 6-5 200 SF, Southern Lab, LA. Slightly leaning to Iowa State over LSU, but is probably Juco bound
7) Tang Hamilton - 6-8 200 CF, Jackson Lanier HS, MS. Signed with MSU
8) Robert O'Kelly - 6-2 180 2G, Memphis, TN. Signed with Wake Forest
9) Jumaine Jones - 6-7 245 PF, Camilla, GA. Signed with Georgia
10) Byron Mouton - 6-4 175 2G, Rayne, LA. Considering Tulane, LSU, and North Carolina State
01/10/97 - According to Kevin Henderson's OUTSTANDING recruiting publication MISSISSIPPI HOOPS, Detric White, 6-1 185 point guard from Conners State CC, has been at the last two MSU home games while spending time with his mother during the break back home in Durant. Kevin believes this confirms his belief that Detric will be a Bulldog next year despite a big rush by Kansas. He asked coach Danny Robertson of Durant to describe Detric's game. "He does everything well, and will find a way to beat you, but his most important trait is his ability to stay focused and never get rattled." (If you guys have $30 to spare, MISSISSIPPI HOOPS is well worth the money. Kevin does an OUTSTANDING job with his publication.)
01/08/97 - It appears Tyrus Boswell is not as far from qualifying as eveyone is saying. There is a good chance he will qualify. He still has a lot of school work in front of him, but with a solid effort on his part, he will be in a Bulldog uniform next year. This comes from a very reliable source who is close to the situation.
01/07/97 - A player who just today mentioned he is considering Miss State is Michael Gholar, a 2/G - S/F type. According to The Clarion-Ledger, he is considering Jackson State, Southern Miss and Miss State in basketball, if he plays that sport. He is also a top-notch QB and he is considering Ole Miss, Alcorn State and Jackson State if he chooses football.
01/05/97 - In his last two games, Mississippi State signee Tang Hamilton has scored 16 and 10 pts. The first game was a 60 pt rout and he didn't play a lot of minutes. The second game was a 64-51 victory over Provine. One player from Provine we need to keep an eye on is 6-5 1/2 freshman forward Justin Reed. He scored 14 pts against Lanier. He sounds like a potential star of the future.
01/01/97 - According to the December 31st edition of the Tennessean, Kirk Haston, a 6-10 235 post player from Perry county in Tennessee is being recruited by Miss State. Other schools trying to get his signature are Michigan State, Ohio State, Western Kentucky and Purdue. He is averaging 24 pts, 14 rebs and 7 blks per game. Kirk's coach says teams have been concentrating on him this year and he is still putting up even bigger numbers. Kirk at first wanted to stay close to home, but since then he has decided a 6 or 7 hour drive wouldn't bother him at all.
