MSU December 1996 Basketball Skuttle-Butt

This page consists of facts I have read and rumors that I have heard or been emailed. I cannot vouch for the accuracy of the rumors, but I want all of you to know what I know. However, I will not put negative rumors about any university or it's coaches on this page.

12/31/96 - According to Las Vegas Sun reporter Tim Graham, Tyrus Boswell was obviously (his word) one of the top five players in the Reebok Prep Classic Tournament which was played last week. Tim said he was probably the best rebounder and would be a future star. He also said Tyrus had several monster performances.

12/31/96 - For those of you who are wondering why Tang Hamilton has such up and down games, Tang plays on a team that is very well-balanced. There are three D-I prospects on his team; Tang, Mangum and Hatcher. Also, they are a very good team and sometimes, when the score gets out of hand, Tang doesn't get a lot of playing time. Just thought some of you might be curious.

12/30/96 - Not to be outdone by Tyrus Boswell, Tang Hamilton had a big game against Greenville. His team won 77-67 and he scored 33 pts. Source: The Clarion-Ledger

12/29/96 - According to Reidel's Roundball Review, Tang Hamilton is considered the 19th best senior player in the Southeast. If you can believe this, they don't even have Tyrus Boswell ranked in the top 25. Don't these guys have a clue? Looking at the junior class they have Ontario Harper, 6-5 guard from Clinton, Ms, ranked as the 4th best junior player in the southeast and Cedric Webb, 6-9 forward/center from Gentry-Indianola, Ms., ranked as the 14th best junior player.

12/29/96 - In his latest game, Tang Hamilton scored 14 points. Source: The Clarion-Ledger

12/27/96 - In the JPS/Pepsi Holiday Tournament, Tang Hamilton scored 20 pts in a 124-43 victory over Dexter. Source: The Clarion-Ledger

12/27/96 - A Mississippi basketball player who is not getting the recognition he deserves is Chris Brown, a 6-0 senior guard from Tchula Marshall. In the JPS/Pepsi Holiday Tournament, he scored 25 pts and handed out 10 assists in a 76-55 win over Richland. His coach feels he is the best guard in the state. One reason for his lack of publicity is this is only his second season of playing organized basketball. So far, he has not heard from any colleges. He was also an all-division cornerback in football with 13 interceptions as a senior. Marcus Terrell, the outstanding guard for Richland, did not play in this game because he was serving a one-game suspension for disciplinary reasons. Source: The Clarion-Ledger

12/27/96 - Here's more Tyrus Boswell info. In his latest game he scored 27 pts as Mtn. Brook defeated Fletcher HS (FL) in the King Cotton Classic in Pine Bluff, AR.

12/25/96 - Tyrus Boswell did very well in the Las Vegas Reebok Prep Classic Tournament. Out of 54 total teams, his team finished 10th, losing 79-74 in OT to Crossroads of California in the ninth place game. In that game he had 40 pts and 22 rebs. His 40 point effort was the 3rd best of the entire tournament. He also had 3 of the 7 best rebound games of all the players in the tournament. He had the 1st (25), 2nd (22) and 7th (17) best games. I believe his team played 4 games. If that is correct, his averages were 26 pts per game and 17.3 rebs per game. Considering this tournament had 20+ NBA teams and 70+ colleges watching the action, I would have to believe Tyrus' stock has skyrocketed. Remember, most of the top players in the country were in this field. The statistics and game score are courtesy of the Las Vegas Sun.

12/22/96 - Tyrus Boswell scored 11 points in Mountain Brook's 59-35 loss to Bishop Gorman of Las Vegas. According to Ron Ingram of The Birmingham News, Tyrus kept Mountain Brook close for a while in the first half with 11 first-half points, including one slam dunk which started from the free-throw line and brought the crowd to its feet. Mountain Brook, however, couldn't overcome the Gaels' physical style of play. Boswell was physically held at times in the first half and Mountain Brook guards were repeatedly battered, but fouls were not called.

This game is one of of many that is being played at the 20th annual Reebok Holiday Prep Classis in Las Vegas. Many of the top teams and players in the nation are at this tournament. As many as 20 NBA teams and 75 colleges and universities are in attendance to watch all of the high schools players in it.

12/22/96 - According to Recruiter's Handbook, Detric White, a player Miss State is recruiting, is the number 2 juco player in the country.

12/22/96 - Recruiter's Handbook has 6-9 center Cedric Webb of Indianola (MS) Gentry listed as the 9th best junior player in the country.

12/22/96 - Here's how Miss State stacked up in college basketball recruiting: Bob Gibbons - 16th; Recruiter's Handbook - 20th; Future Stars - 26th.

12/22/96 - According to Bob Gibbons' All-Star Sports, Miss State is still recruiting 6-10 center Antoine Broxsie and 6-7 forward Rouldra Thomas. Antoine is leaning to Nebraska and Rouldra is leaning to Miss State and Alabama.

12/22/96 - Tyrus Boswell scored 29 pts with 22 rebs in his latest game.

12/21/96 - Here's the latest Todd Myles update from Howie Stalwick of the Couer d'Alene Press. Todd is averaging 11.4 pts per game, 1.7 steals, 8.8 assists, 3.2 rebounds, 3.5 turnovers and no blocks. His shooting percentages are: FG - 43.8%. FT - 60.6%. 3-PT - 24.1%. His steals are really going up since he got into conference play. The conference he plays in is considered to be one of the 3 or 4 best in the country, according to Howie. Todd is still leading the conference in assists with his nearest competitor averaging 6.1, He is third in the league in steals per game. Howie continues to rave about Todd each time I talk to him. He said Todd has tremendous quickness, ballhandling skills and vision. Just an outstanding point guard, unlike anyone they have ever seen in that part of the country. The next Todd Myles update will be Jan 16th. His team is on Christmas break until Jan 6th and the stats won't be out until the following week.

12/16/96 - Tang Hamilton scored 25 points in his latest game.

12/15/96 - According to The Commercial Dispatch, Early Smith has decided to transfer. Coach Williams believes he will be transferring to the University of Houston.

12/15/96 - Also, Horatio Webster is expected to be out for at least another week with a badly bruised foot. Hopefully he will only miss the games played this week.

12/15/96 - I was told last night at a Christmas party that Tyrus Boswell's team has only played 1 game so far and that he scored 25 points and had 15 rebounds.

12/15/96 - Here's the latest Todd Myles update from Howie Stalwick of the Couer d'Alene Press. Todd's team is 8-0 with the two victories this past week. He is still leading the league in assists with 9.8 per game. He is also averaging 12.3 points per game, with 1.1 steals per game and 3.4 rebounds per game. He also is averaging 3.8 turnovers per game. His shooting percentages are as follows: FG - 45.8%, 3-PT FG - 26.9%, FT - 65.2%. He had a very good game against the then #3 ranked Utah Valley State JC, with 12 points, 12 assists and 5 steals. Howie said Todd is definitely gettting better since his team has gotten into league play.

12/15/96 - Three nights ago Tang Hamilton had 9 points against Cohen HS, a team from Louisiana. Cohen has on their team Edwin "Greedy" Daniels, one of the point guards we tried to recruit. He scored 29 points in that game, which his team won 62-58.

12/12/96 - Last night against Jackson Murrah, Tang Hamilton scored 20 points. Included in the 20 points were six 3-pt shots.

12/08/96 - Tang Hamilton scored 9 points in his last game. His team is now 13-1.

12/06/96 - Found out today that Cedric Wallace torn the ACL in his knee. Will be out for the season. Not sure if that will effect our recruiting him. Really bad break for Cedric.

12/06/96 - Tang Hamilton scored 21 pts Wednesday night. I believe Tang is averaging 22 ppg.

12/06/96 - Here's the first Todd Myles update: After 6 games he is averaging 11.7 pts per game, 9.2 assists (leading the league), 3.3 rebs, 4 turnovers (most of them, according to Howie, was during what he termed garbage time), .5 steals. He is shooting 29.4% from 3-pt range (5-17), overall he is shooting 44.8%, and 76.5% free throw shooting. I asked Howie what he thought of him after seeing him a few game: Tremendous ball handler, great passer, very quick, tremendous one-on-one skills, on defense very good in the full court press. The only negative is that he is not a great pure shooter. BTW, he is only shooting the ball an average of 9.9 times per game. The team is averaging 97.2 pts per game and they have won all 6 so far. Got into league play Thursday night. My next Todd Myles post will be next Friday. Hope you enjoyed this one. Howie Stalwick, Sports Editor of the Coeur d'Alene Press, very graciously provided the info.

12/05/96 - Tang Hamilton scored 28 pts in his last game.

12/05/96 - Here's a little info on Cedric Wallace that I found in Rick Ball's BALLPLAYERS J. C. Report. "6-4 Cedric Wallace / Northeast - MM 190# best at 15-18' range, frosh year of 18/8/4 and should graduate and very under-recruited???" (My interpretation of what he said: Wallace is 6-4 190lbs, MM means Median/Major which means he is not a major talent, but is a very good talent. Higher levels are HM (high/major) and Super (self explainatory), 18 pts 8 rebs 4 assists his freshman year.

12/03/96 - You wanted it, here it is. An article about Todd Myles all the way from Idaho, courtesy of the Coeur d'Alene Press, byline by Howie Stalwick. Effective Friday or Saturday of this week, I will have weekly updates of how Todd is doing at North Idaho College, courtesy of Howie Stalwick, Sports Editor of the Coeur d'Alene Press.

12/03/96 - In his last two games, Tang Hamilton has scored 30 points; 12 and 18 points respectively.

12/02/96 - Bob Gibbons All Star Sports Report has Miss State listed in his top twenty recruiting classes for the early signing period. The way he has the teams listed, has MSU ranked 17th. The only other SEC team in the top twenty is Tennessee at 5th. Alabama was ranked 23rd. Ole Miss was 42th. If you can believe this, he didn't have Kentucky ranked in his top 40. That's the second bad recruiting year in a row for them. The first four teams are Duke, Iowa State, Fresno State and St. John's.
