01/28/98 - The latest word is MSU baseball pitcher Scott Polk's arm is coming along fine. In fact, my source said Scott feels he is throwing better than ever.

01/27/98 - The rumormill is stirring. According to a couple of sources, Coach Pat McMahon is going to get the MSU fans more involved in MSU baseball. Look for announcements to be made in the future. Coach McMahon didn't ask me, but something that I would like to see more of is fan appreciation type promotions.

01/26/98 - Miss State baseball is right around the corner (Feb. 17th) and to get you in the mood, Miss State head baseball coach Pat McMahon is inviting all of you to the THE FIRST PITCH Banquet on Tuesday, February 10th. The Buffet Dinner will begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Colvard Union Ballroom. Tickets are $400 for a table for 8 or $30 for individuals. For ticket information, contact The Bulldog Club (601)325-3074 or the MSU Athletic Ticket Office (601)325-2600. The Banquet will feature the 1998 MSU Diamond Dogs, Head Coach Pat McMahon, Best-selling author John Grisham, Former MSU baseball coach Ron Polk, Major league baseball all-star Jeff Brantley and MSU President Dr. Malcolm Portera.

I'm not sure about particulars, but MSU baseball is doing this to publicize the The First Pitch Club which will be similar to MSU basketball's Babe McCarthy Tip-Off Club. Show your support and just this club when the information on how to join becomes public.

01/18/98 - Guess who signed the top junior college baseball player in the country? According to Baseball America, Miss State did when they signed Chris Curry of Meridian CC. Last year for MCC, Chris batted .388 with 10 home runs and 55 RBI's.

01/14/98 - The first day of Miss State baseball practice is next Monday (Jan. 19th). BTW, Charlie Anderson's new title is actually Adminstration - Camp Coordinator.

01/13/98 - According to a couple of sources of mine, MSU baseball player Brett Muhlhan's brother passed away Sunday. Brett has gone to be with his family at this very sad time. Brett, all Bulldog fans share your grief and we all are praying for you and your family.

01/10/98 - The word I hear is new head coach Pat McMahon has shorter, but more intense workouts and passionately wants to take Miss State baseball to the next level.

01/07/98 - Just heard a rumor that former Miss State second baseman Charlie Anderson will be Miss State's new volunteer baseball coach. Like I said, it is only a rumor at this point.

01/06/98 - The word from one of the players is Coach Mac is expecting a lot of hustle in practice and has really got the guys working hard in the weight room. This player was back home visiting over the Christmas holidays and had really muscled up, according to my source.

01/06/98 - I received my latest Baseball American yesterday. They have Miss State rated 21st in the nation. Other SEC team ranked in the top 25 are:

  • 03rd - LSU
  • 04th - Florida
  • 07th - Alabama
  • 11th - Auburn
  • 15th - South Carolina
  • Stanford is ranked 1st.

Miss State is projected to wind up 4th in the SEC West, but the good news is we are also projected to be an NCAA Tournament Team along with Alabama, Auburn, Florida, LSU, South Carolina and Tennessee. According to Baseball America, the SEC has never been more strong or balanced as it is this year

They also ranked the top college stadiums with Arkansas coming in first. The top 15 are as follows:

  • 1st - Arkansas
  • 2nd - Hawaii
  • 3rd - Auburn
  • 4th - Mississippi State
  • 5th - San Diego State
  • 6th - Fresno State
  • 7th - Florida
  • 8th - Clemson
  • 9th - Texas A&M
  • 10th - Arizona State
  • 11th - Ohio State
  • 12th - Texas
  • 13th - Georgia
  • 14th - Tennessee
  • 15th - Long Beach State
  • 01/05/98 - As promised, here is the senior year info about Miss State freshman pitcher Tanner Brock:

  • 7-1, with 4 saves, 1.08 ERA, 78 IP, 88 Ks.
  • 2nd Team All-Conference and 3rd Team All-Central Florida.
  • Drafted in the 47th Round of the MLB Draft.
  • One of the Top 30 Draft Prospects in Florida (HS and JC) according to the Orlando Sentinel.
  • Pitched a no-hitter (he and his teammates were 1 pitch shy of seting a new national record of 4 consecutive no-hitters.
  • During district and regional playoff series play, Tanner pitched 8 2/3 innings of shutout relief, giving up one hit, one walk, and striking out 17 batters.
  • Struck out 6 of 7 batters faced, to get the save against Ocala Forest H.S.
  • Pitched 4 2/3 innings of shutout relief, to win the regionals against Jacksonville Mandarin H.S.
  • Helped Lake Brantley HS, along with Bulldog pitcher signee Shaun Child, win the class 6A State Championship and wind up with a national ranking of 8th according to USA Today..
  • I would like to hear from some of you with similar type info about other Miss State freshmen players. This is a great way for all of us to get familiar with the newest Bulldog.

01/04/98 - Did you know Miss State baseball freshman pitcher Tanner Brock was clocked as high as 92 mph in high school and consistently throws his fastball in the high 80's? Did you also know he was rated among the top 30 draft prospects of Florida high school and college players by the Orlando Sentinel newspaper? Makes you wonder why he was drafted in the 47th round, doesn't it? Not me, because my source told me once Tanner signed on the dotted line with Miss State, he was a loyal Bulldog from that day forward and he told the major league teams of this fact, but he was drafted anyway. Now, this is the type young man I want on our Miss State baseball team, one that is not only talented but loyal. Thank you, Tanner. I'll have a few facts about Tanner's senior season tomorrow.

If any of you have info on any of our other freshmen players, email it to me. I want all of you to know as much about these players as possible.

01/01/98 - Our very own head baseball coach Pat McMahon will be one of the speakers (speaking on pitching) at the annual ABCA (American Baseball Coaches Association) convention. It is a very prestigious honor to be selected to speak at this event. Just goes to show you the caliber of coach we have at Miss State (we already knew this, now didn't we?).
