08/28/97 - According to a source of mine, MSU signee Shaun Child was not approved by the NCAA Clearinghouse.
08/27/97 - The latest rumor I have heard is one of our baseball signees had not shown up for school. According to my source, the missing in action signee is Shaun Child, a 5-10 160, LHP from Altamonte Springs, FL. Anybody know anything about his whereabouts?
08/22/97 - MSU second baseman Travis Chapman and OF/P Brian Wiese both had a great summer with the Danville Dans of the Central Illinois Collegiate League (CICL). Travis Chapman was the MVP of the CICL, after hitting .451, and Brian Wiese was the Co-MVP of the league tournament.
08/20/97 - We've been talking about the eligibility of the football and basketball signees quite a bit, but haven't mentioned a word about the baseball signees. The latest word I have is all of them will qualify.
08/09/97 - Here's the latest Polk-DeMent Stadium expansion project info that I heard at the Annual Bulldog Club Meeting Friday:
Skyboxes:
1) There will be 18 Skyboxes added to the stadium, 9 on each side of the grandstand. The boxes will be leased for 10 years in two ways: One-time, front-end payment of $120,000 or Annual payment of $14,000 for 10 years (Notes: (1) Owners will get option to continue lease at the end of 10 years, (2) Eighty (80) percent of the gift to the Bulldog Club is deductible according to current interpretations of the Internal Revenue Service.)
2) First-base boxes will be connected by walkway to Humphrey Coliseum concourse.
3) Each box will be 12'6" x 17' inside with the following features included:
--Painted and furnished with carpeting, lavatory and kitchen fixtures.
--15-16 chairback seats.
--Heating/Air-conditioning
4) A minimum of 12 season tickets must be purchased annually by the box owner.
Chairback Seats:
1) 1,034 seats.
2) One-time contributions of $1,000 for each seat.
3) Name will be placed on each seat purchased.
4) Seats are kept as long as season tickets are renewed.
If you are interested in purchasing a skybox or chairback seat, call the Athletic Department. You better hurry since six of the skyboxes have already been or are close to being sold (Ron Polk purchased one himself). BTW, the expansion is supposed to be ready for the 1999 season.
08/08/97 - According to ESPN, major league scouts project MSU baseball pitcher Chris Reinike to go in the first two rounds in next year's draft.
08/07/97 - Looks like MSU second baseman Travis Chapman did alright in the Central Illinois Summer Baseball League. He set an all time batting average record by hitting .450 for the year.
08/05/97 - Look for Itawamba CC third baseman Mike Pepper to walk on at State this year. I was told by my source that Mike is a very solid looking player. Mike was at State a couple of years ago, but decided to go the Juco route to work on his skills.
08/04/97 - Evan Ray, an outfielder who plays on the Pontotoc American Legion team, is going to walk on at Miss State this coming season. Evan is a great contact hitter who batted .408, with 10 doubles, 2 triples, 2 home runs, 23 stolen bases and 26 RBI during Pontotoc's regular season. He also walked 15 times and struck out 5 times in 125 at bats. I've seen Evan play; he has a chance to be a good one.
08/01/97 - The Commercial Appeal reports " Cory Sumner, a designated hitter/ outfielder for Germantown High, will play his college baseball at Miss State. Sumner, who hit .500 with four homers, 41 runs batted in and 18 stolen bases in 33 games for the Red Devils, was named the team's most valuable offensive player. At Miss State, he will enjoy a homecoming of sorts. He lived in Starkville as a preschooler when his father, Tim, was an assistant coach for the Bulldogs."
