07/26/97 - You want to see how some of our baseball players are doing in the summer college baseball leagues? Click here for Travis Chapman and Brian Wiese and here for Brett Muhlhan and here for Matt Ginter.
07/19/97 - I was emailed information a few minutes ago that the Associated Press has confirmed what we already knew, MSU shortstop Brad Freeman will indeed be coming back for his senior year.
07/18/97 - Hot off the presses. MSU shortstop Brad Freeman, as I'm sure all of you know, left last Friday with intentions of signing a pro baseball contract. He flew to somewhere in North Carolina, spent the weekend, and decided to come back home. It appears playing minor league baseball did not live up to his expectations. Since Brad did not actually sign a contract, it seems he is still considered an amateur and will be allowed to play at Miss State next season. I tell you what folks, I wish all draftees would do this. It sure would help colleges keep more of their signees and drafted players.
Since we are on the subject of Bulldog baseball players that were drafted, you will all be happy to know that someone who knows present Bulldog player Jeremy Jackson has told me that Jeremy will not be signing a pro contract and will most definitely be back next year.
07/13/97 - According to a source very close to the situation, MSU shortstop Brad Freeman may be about to sign a pro contract. According to my source, he is visiting with his parents this weekend to talk to them about his options. My source feels it is only a matter of days before he will sign a pro contract. I'll let you know as soon as I know.
07/13/97 - I was told Saturday, MSU second baseball Travis Chapman, who is playing for Danville of the Illinois League, was voted MVP of the league for the first half of the season. I can't confirm this at this time, but my source is a very solid baseball source.
07/10/97 - A source of mine is hearing that MSU shortstop Brad Freeman may not sign a pro contract and be back at State next year. I'm surprised, to tell you the truth. It's very unusual for a drafted junior to not sign a pro contract. Still pretty early to predict he will not sign, since a draftee has until the minute he attends his first class to sign a pro contract. According to my source, the reasons Brad has not signed is because he has not been offered enough money to skip his senior year of school and he has a desire to play for Coach McMahon.
07/03/97 - Just thought some of you would like to know more about MSU signee Ricky Lambert, from Tishomingo County HS. Here's what one of my sources said about Ricky: "Ricky is not the most athletic person in the world, especially running, but he is one of the best hitters this state has ever produced. He is, in my opinion, a better baseball player than Blake Holly, also from TCHS. The pressure put on Ricky after signing with state was enormous. He still averaged around 485 this year. He has the potenial to become one of the SEC's top hitters."
07/01/97 - One of my sources has told me that we'll be hiring Jim Case as our new assistant baseball coach.
Also, former Bulldog Charlie Anderson will be working with Jim Ellis -- not sure when he starts. He is also getting married soon. Congrats on both counts Charlie.
Van Johnson is engaged. No date set, that I know of. Congrats, Van.
