How do I make repairs or who should I contact for professional repairs  ?

Many people attempt their own simple repairs.  A simple repair might be a small chip, a broken eyelash, or even a broken bow or finger.  Many people attempt minor repairs quite successfully.  Pages 373 - 377 in our book Collecting Head Vases Identification and Value Guide from Collector books 384 pages 2004 show you how to do some cleaning and repair.  It also gives some names of recommended professionals.  There may be others but these are ones that we personally know and recommend.  Visit our homepage to order the book directly from us and have your copy author signed at http://www.ebicom.net/~dlb/heads.htm  By buying directly from the author you show them your support and  you get a signed copy.  Many authors of collectible books make very little considering all the time and effort that goes into putting together a book.  They do make a little more when you buy directly from them.  You can also click on the following site which includes some of the information from our book on this subject of repairs  http://www.ebicom.net/~dlb/c20.htm

Why is the Annual Head Vase convention always held in Florida ?

It has been held for the past 13 years in Kissimmee, Florida.   When the idea first came about it took several large dealers to put it together. They could come to the Florida area to set up.  That's sort of how it started there.  Now, it is held in conjunction with the Renninger's Antique show and flea market extravaganza which is held in January of each year in Mount Dora, Florida about an hour from the convention.  Many convention goers like to come to the convention, and also attend this huge extravaganza.  The head vase convention offers an optional bus trip which conveneniently picks you up at the hotel, stays at the show so you can bring your purchases back to the bus, or just sit in the bus and relax before you shop some more.  It then brings you back to the hotel.... all the while you are with other head hunters.  Renningers is 117 acres...... 40,000 sq feet inside under air conditioning.  The rest is outside.   Also it gives many an opportunity to make a vacation out of if by bringing other members of the family and then taking in some of the attractions in and around Kissimmee.   The entrance to Walt Disney World is only 1.5 miles away.  For information on the convention contact Maddy Gordon at maddy.gordon@worldnet.att.het or call her at (914) 472-0200

What happened to your section on reproduction heads?

The reproductions are coming out so fast that to keep up with them would be a fulltime job. Chrissy does a great job on showing the reproductions on her website, so we now just link you over there. Go to http://www.chrissy.com/heads.html and click on Fakes and Reproductions.  She also sells many of the reproduction heads, so if you want to obtain some check out her website.   We certainly think a reproduction head should always be sold as a reproduction head and so identified.  This is not always the case.  Be careful if you are not sure.  Sometimes on Ebay this fact is not mentioned.  Maybe the person didn't really know.  Most collectors aren't against new heads coming out.... it is the one's that are meant to deceive that are the problem...

How many head vases were made ?

Unfortunately no one knows the answer.  There is no book with all of the heads in them.  This is partially due to the fact that many of the old heads that aren't in any books still continue to show up.  No records were kept for many of them, or either they didn't survive.  They were made in mass quantities and most came from Japan.  They were inexpensive and used mostly by florists although many were sold through stores such as the local 5 and 10 cent stores,  Woolworth stores, etc.  We saw over 50,000 heads in putting together our books, and many of them were the same ones we saw over and over.  We are still amazed at how many we there still may be that aren't in any book
